Best known as the back drop for the Movie, “Tomb Raider”, Bayon Temple is one of the most amazing places on Earth. Set in the lush Southeast Asian jungle of Cambodia, Bayon appears out of nowhere in surreal splendor. Aside from Bayon, the Northern Cambodian province of Siem Reap boasts several marvelous temple structures, the most famous of which is Angkor Wat.
However, the jungle temple of Bayon, second only in size to the majestic Angkor, possess a magic all its own. And I would urge any adventurous traveler to get there however you can. Taking in this daunting artifact is a life changing experience. The structure itself is a wonder to behold. And the stone relief carvings remain an enigma.
If you decide to go to Siem Reap, and have never done any extreme traveling before, be informed that you will need proper immunization, and a current passport. You should also be aware, that while quite beautiful, Cambodia is still a developing country, There is no ATM or convenience store on every other corner. Siem Reap is a place literally ‘carved out of the jungle’. So plan accordingly.
At the end of the day though, I will say that Siem Riep, Cambodia, where Bayon Temple is locared, albeit socioeconomically modest, offered some of the tidiest and most hospitable accommodations I encountered while traveling in Southeast Asia. So on that note, do try and visit. You won’t regret it. And the vibes are sure to enrich your life.
